Nurseryman Frank still going strong after 58 years
Frank Mitchell, after 58 years at the helm of Pinewood Quality Nursery is showing no signs of slowing down. "I am living the moment, I love what I do," Frank said.
Rated one of the top four nurseries in Victoria with 1200 customers per week, Pinewood Quality Nursery is a family owned and run business employing 18 full and part-time staff.
Frank and his wife, Nancy, opened Pinewood Quality Nursery on October 2, 1960. At that time there was only one other business in the area – The Pinewood Newsagency.
Frank has been involved in gardening all his life. Gardening, flowers and plants make people happy. Frank worked on market gardens, and then trained at Warner's Nursery in Burwood before opening Pinewood Quality Nursery.
Juggling both work at Warner's and his own nursery gave Frank the kick start he needed to make Pinewood Nursery the icon in Waverley today.
Gardening is not a job, but a delight, bringing pleasure to many people, including Frank himself.
Frank's daughters Annette and Dorothy are staff members with the former handling the marketing and the latter having performed general nursery duties for 36 years, while his two granddaughters Anjee and Ashlee work on the cash registers.
Pinewood Quality Nursery, which won the award in the Business section of the Waverley Leader 10 years in a row, continues to grow and meet the needs of Waverley and surrounding areas. With the introduction of indoor plants, it has met the demand for the apartment dwelling in our suburbs.
Flowers and plants put smiles on faces, from young children watching flowers bloom, the aged who appreciate the fragrances and splendour of the gardens to young ladies who look to red roses as the ultimate gift, there's something for everyone.
